How & what we teach

Our Teaching Philosophy

Our teaching approach follows a “learning through play” model, where our qualified teachers use a structured theme-based teaching programme that allows children to try new things and learn through experience to help them reach their full potential. Parents are such an important part of a child’s learning process, so we encourage you to take part in your child’s day-to-day education through fun homework activities.

Nicolini Nursery School is registered with the Department of Education. We follow the CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) system and ELDA (Early Learning and Development Areas) curriculum, as outlined by the National Curriculum Framework. We follow a set of dedicated themes throughout the year, ensuring your child covers topics from colours all the way to climate change.

Our Classes

At Nicolini Preschool, we have two classes per age group from Grade RRR (ages 3 to4) through to Grade R (ages 5 to 6).
In addition, our dedicated Baby Centre offers nurturing care and structured support for children from 3 months to 2 years.

Baby Centre (ages 3 months to 2 years)

Our Baby Centre is a warm, secure environment where infants and toddlers receive attentive care from experienced staff.

We offer:

● A BabyRoom for infants aged 3 to 18 months, focused on sensory development and responsive care.
● Two PottyTraining Classes for toddlers aged 18 months to 2 years, which include early learning activities, routines, and independence-building in a safe space.

Grade RRR (ages 3 to 4)

This age group explores foundational learning through interactive play. The focus is on language development, social interaction, fine motor skills and building confidence. All within a fun, age-appropriate, and supportive classroom.

Grade RR (ages 4 to 5)

Our “learning through play” model continues with increased structure. Using a theme-based curriculum, qualified teachers introduce pre-literacy and numeracy skills through hands-on activities. Children are encouraged to explore, imagine and experiment to build essential early learning skills.

Grade R (ages 5 to 6)

Grade R serves as a critical bridge to formal schooling. Our curriculum prepares learners for Grade 1 by developing early reading, writing and mathematical concepts. We cover a wide range of themes throughout the year, from colours and seasons to basic geography and climate change. This phase equips children with the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need for a smooth transition to primary school.

Should you have older children, Primary school aftercare services are also available. We provide a safe and caring space for your child to complete their homework and play under qualified supervision.

Robotics

Coding and Robotics lessons are an exciting part of our offering from Grade R through to Grade 3.In Grade R, these lessons are built into the school day and introduce learners to the world of coding and robotics through hands-on activities that develop computational thinking.

Key concepts include logical reasoning, pattern recognition, decomposition, abstraction, and algorithms—the foundation of how computers and robots "think".

For learners in Grades 1 to 3, we offer afternoon Coding & Robotics classes. These sessions are open to children attending other primary schools, allowing them to continue building on the concepts introduced in Grade R. The programme becomes more structured and challenging as learners grow, fostering skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and digital literacy—essential tools for navigating the future.

Educational Shows & Fun Days

At Nicolini, we prioritise stimulating and age-appropriate activities for the holistic development of your children. Our learners experience educational shows (included in the school fees) – such as Sam the Fireman, farm animals visiting the school, puppet shows and many more – to broaden their learning beyond the classroom.

Fun Days like Ice Cream Day, Valentine’s Day and Feast Days for Easter and Christmas allow our learners to play and enjoy themselves – a crucial part of their development.
